Tips for Successful Tutoring

  • Try to determine the needs of the tutee, be it organizational skills, time management skills, help with daily homework, or confidence building.
  • Try to determine the learning style of your tutee. Take some time to talk to them to get to know them. See if you can identify the kinds of problem they are having.
  • Make sure that they study with a pencil or pen and paper. Talk about how to prepare for tests and exams.
  • Encourage tutee to sit beside someone in their class who is successful.
  • Encourage tutee to spend more time practicing their skills and knowledge daily.
  • When working with your tutee, always try to ask leading questions to help them work through a problem on their own.
  • Stay on-task during tutoring session.
  • Always work to reduce anxiety! Never insult your tutee if they do not understand a concept.
  • Be patient and cooperative!
  • Enjoy your successes!

Possible Tutoring Locations

We would strongly encourage you to conduct your tutoring sessions in a calm and public environment (i.e. library). Please do not tutor in the hallways or in the stairwells, as it is often impossible to concentrate in those types of places.

Logs

In order to collect all of your community service hours obtained from tutoring, please pick up a log sheet. For each session of tutoring, write down the date, the length of the session and ask your tutee to sign it. Lastly, submit these logs to Guidance through the Community Service Google Form to ensure that these hours will count towards your community service hours.
